Knife attack in Solingen (Germany)

  • At 21:37 on 23 August 2024, a knife attack took place in the German city of Solingen.1
  • Thousands of people were celebrating the 650th anniversary of the city of Solingen when a man began stabbing indiscriminately at those present.2
  • As a result of the attack, 3 people died and 8 were injured, five of them seriously.
  • The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which it said occurred ‘in revenge for Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere’ and was committed by an ‘Islamic State soldier targeting Christians’.3
  • German police arrested two people for committing the attack, one of them a minor. At least one of those arrested was a Syrian national residing in a refugee centre. 4
